PHASE EQUILIBRIA OF THE GROUP IVA METALS WITH YTTRIUM
The binary alloy systems Y-Ti, Y-Zr, and Y-Hf were investigated throughout their entire composition regions. There is no compound formation in any of the systems, and each system is characterized by a single eutectic reaction. The eutectic compositions and temperatures are as follows: Y-Ti systems, L in equilibrium beta -Ti + alpha -Y, 1385 deg C and 12.0 wt% Ti; Y- Zr system, L in equilibrium beta - Zr + alpha -Y, 1385 deg C and 44.0 wt% Zr; Y-Hf system, L in equilibrium alpha -Hf + alpha -Y, 1425 deg C and 23.0 wt% Hf. A eutectoid reaction: beta -Ti in equilibrium alpha -Ti + alpha -Y at 0.4 wt % Y and 870 deg C occurs in the Y- Ti system, whereas a peritectoid reaction: beta -Zr + alpha -Y in equilibrium alpha -Zr at 0.6 wt % Y and 880 deg C occurs in the Y-Zr system. Peritectic type reactions at temperatures above thc eutectic levels are postulated for the yttrium and hafnium transformations. (auth)
