The magnetohydrodynamic stability of laminar viscous flow between two rotating concentric circular cylinders in the presence of a circular magnetic field is discussed. Assuming that the difference between the radii of the inner and the outer cylinders is small compared with their arithmetic mean, the condition for the onset of instability is obtained. In a special case when 4 pi nu mu sigma = 1, a simple relationship exists between the eigenvalues in magnetic and nonmagnetic cases for arbitrary values of the amplification factor. (auth)
