ABSOLUTE CALIBRATIONS OF THERMAL NEUTRON FLUX DENSITIES
The thermal neutron flux densities in a 190 x 170 x 190 cm graphite standard pile were calibrated by means of absolute measurements of induced activities in gold foils irradiated in these thermal neutron fluxes. The activities were measured with a 4 pi beta - gamma coincidenee counter. The thermal neutron flux densities (nv/sub o/) at r = 30, 50, and 70 cm along the axis of 190 cm were 14.0 x 10/sup 3/, 7.66 x 10/sup 3/, and 3.47 x 10/sup 3/ n/cm/ sup 2//sec, respectively. The estimated accuracy was plus or minus 1.9%. The average fluxes nv were also determined taking into account the effect of the epithermal neutrons. These values were 16.0 x 10/sup 3/ and 8.71 x 10/sup 3/ n/ cm sup 2// sec at r = 30 and 50 cm, respectively. (auth)
