ON THE IONIZATION MEASUREMENTS AND THE PROCESS OF TRACK FORMATION IN NUCLEAR EMULSIONS

Journal Article · · Proc. Natl. Inst. Sci. India. Pt. A
OSTI ID:4801423

Track formation by an ionizing particle in a nuclear emulsion is considered. Assuming a random distribution of grains in G-5 emulsions, a theoretical relation was established for calculating the probability of development of a grain which depends on the characteristics of the emulsion and that of the charged particle producing the track. The experimental verification of the results was done by measuring long gap lengths on identified tracks in G-5 emulsions exposed to cosmic radiation. The results support the mechanism of recombination and track formation and explain the experimental curves of grain density vs. specific energy loss. (auth)
