A fuel element is designed which is suitable for stacking one upon another in a reactor. The fuel element comprises a container housing the fuel and end closure members shaped to have at one end a conical recess and at the other end a conical projection. Both end closure members have fins running in the direction of the longitudinal length of the element to contribute to further cooling of the parts bearing the weight of the stacked fuel elements.
