RADIOIODINE STUDIES OF FETAL AND OTHER THYROIDS. Technical Progress Report, January 1962
An experiment was conducted on whether l/sup 131/-labeled triiodothyronine would cross the placenta from the maternal to the fetal circulation. The labeled triiodothyronine was given to the mother by mouth and 16 hr later the l2- to l4-week fetus was removed surgically; the percentage uptake in the fetal thyroid was found to be 0.001%, ~1/10 of that expected for a 12-week fetus. An attempt was made to determine the percentage uptake for NaI/ sup 131/ tracer, and the possibility of the activity of the labeled triiodothyronine transferring as such instead of as NaI is discussed. In the use of I/sup 131/-labeled albumin to determine the blood volume of a pregnant patient with extreme hydramnios and apparent anemia, no activity was found in the amniotic fluid of the fetus a few hr later. A study was made of the thyroid function during fetal development, at birth, after birth, and in children. The preliminary results indicate that the uptake in the fetus increases asymptotically to a value of 2 to 3% near birth and increases tremendously after birth to 15 to 90%. (D.L.C.)
