EXTENSIVE AIR SHOWERS FROM HIGH-ENERGY PHOTONS (in Russian)

Extensive air showers were discussed by R. Maze and A, Zawadski (Nuovo cimento, 17: 625(1960)) who found that the number of showers containing more than 10/sup 6/ particles at sea level is not more than 1% of the ondinary showers formed by protons and nuclei. It was attempted to determine experimentally the number of such showers. As the photon and the proton or heavy-nuclei showers differ primarily in the number of the penetrating particles they contain, the upper limit of the number of mu -mesons in photon showers with energies of E = 10/sup 10/ ev and N = 10/sup 7/ particles, was determined together with the spatial distribution of these mesons. Study of 126 extensive air showers with N between 4 x 10/sup 6/ and 2 x 10/sup 7/, recorded within a circle with a 100-m radius, did not reveal a single one with the expected meson ratio. This indicates with a strong probability that not a single electron-photon shower was among the recorded events. (TTT)
