The mathematical methods developed in superconductivity theory were applied to formulate a superfiuid'' model of the nucleus. Formulas are presented for finding the constant for pair interaction. Summing was carried out over energies having an average field (over 36 levels). Singleparticle levels were calculated for a neutron system and for a proton system in the region of 225 < A < 255. The calculated values of the paired energies were compared with experimental data. The constants for pair interaction are G/sub N/ = 26 Mev/A and G/sub Z/ = 29 Mev/A. A table of correlation functions for even systems is given as well as ratios of the correlation functions of excited states to ground states. In calculating the probability of a BETA transition between single- quasi-particle states in odd nucIei, a correction for the superfiuidity R = R/sub N/R/sub z/ was calculated. The theoretical values of log (ft)/sub theor/, were calculated and compared with the experimental values. The corrections for superfiuidity explain the variations in the magnitude of the values of log (ft) / sub exp/. for BETA transitions between identical states in different nuclei. Values of log (ft)/sub theor/. can be calculated between various states in any of the odd nuclei from the data presented. The experimental log (ft) values should be systematized by including the effect of paired correlations and statisticaI factors. The energies of the ground states and of the two-quasiparticle excited levels in Pu/sup 240/ and Cm/sup 244/ were computed along with values of log (ft)/ sub theor/.for the corresponding BETA transitions. The 6/sup +/ level in Cm/sup 244/ was found to have an energy of 1.042-Mev and a log (ft)/sub exp/. = 5.9. These values are in good agreement with the calculated values which give an energy of 0.92 Mev and log (ft)sub theor/ == 6.0. (TTT)
