THE DECAY SCHEME OF 10.1-h Am$sup 24$$sup 4$
A 10.1-hr beta-emitter produced by neutron irradiation of enriched (99.97%) Am/sup 243/ was chemically identified as an isotope of Am and is assigned to an isomer of Am/sup 244/. The decay scheme was studied using a beta spectrometer in addition to gamma - gamma and gamma - beta coicnicidence scintillation counting techniques. A single beta group with an end point energy of 387 plus or minus 1 kev (log ft = 5.7) populates a 1042-kev level in Cm/sup 244/. This 1042-kev level decays to the 4+, 6+, and 8+ members of the ground state rotational band by highly retarded E2 transitions suggesting that it is a (6,6+) particle level. Rotational levels were observed at 0(0,0+), 42.9(0,2+), 142.3(0,4+), decays by beta emission principally to the ground state of Cm/sup 244/ with an energy of 1498 plus or minus 10 kev (log ft = 6.3). Spin assignments of 6- to the 10.1-hr ground state and 1- to the 26-min isomer were obtained by couplings of the odd neutron and odd proton Nilsson orbitals. These assignments are consistent with the data. (auth)
