MECHANISM OF THE RADIATION-INDUCED ADDITION OF TRITIUM TO CARBON-CARBON DOUBLE BONDS. Progress Report
Studies were made on the addition of tritium to cyclohexene and some of its derivatives. The mechanism of the formation of cyclohexane-H/sup 3/ and cyclohexene-H/sup 3/ in the tritiation of cyclohexene was studied. Tritiation of 3bromocyclohexene, but not of cyclohexadlene-1,3, was found to be a good method for preparing cyclohexene-H/sup 3/, and the distribution of tritium in the cyclohexene-H3 obtained in various tritiation experiments was determined. Competitive tritiation experiments were carried out on cyclohexene -- cyclohexadlene-1,3 and cyclohexene -benzene. No electron spin resonance evidence was found for the formation of free radicals in the tritium-cyclohexene interaction. An experiment wlth cyclohexene -acetone shows that acetone cannot predominate over cyclohexene as a scavenger for tritium atoms. (D.L.C.)
