Radioassay of Labelled Organic Compounds Using Gaseous Samples. II. Carbon-14 Assay by means of Carbon Dioxide Counting in the Geiger and the Proportional Region (in Japanese)

Internal gas counting techniques are studied for measuring low-activity carbon-14 in organic substances. The carbon-14 is analyzed by means of carbon dioxide counting in the Geiger-Mueller and proportional region. The characteristics of a proportional counter tube filled with a mixture of carbon dioxide and propane at 1 atm are described. It is shown that the introduction of air up to 1 cm Hg into the counting gas mixture causes a shift of the plateau by about 100 volts towards the higher voltage region without changing the tube performance. Thus, propane is con cluded to be superior as a filling gas to PR gas in t at much larger quantities of carbon dioxide can be us d and that contamination with air has no appreciable effect. The characteristics of a Geiger-Mueller tube filled with a mixture of carbon dioxide and Q gas at 1 atm are also described. Results show that the plateau voltage is markedly higher and the plateau length is shorter with increased partial pressure of carbon dioxide. The resolving time is 160 mu sec. A trace of air in a counting gas mixture shows serious injurious effects.
