SHIELDING ANALYSES FOR THE HNPF FUEL ELEMENT SHIELD PLUGS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4800698
The shielding of the HNPF fuel element shield plug was analyzed and reviewed. The direct gamma radiation penetrating the fuel plug was 0.32 mr/hr. The dose rate due to the direct penetration by fast and thermal neutrons was negligible. Gamma radiation streaming up the 1/16-in. annular gap between the fuel plug and the cavity liner was 2.0 mr/hr. Fast neutron scattering up the 1/ 16-in. gap between the teleflex cable and its conduit had a maximum value of 7 n/ cm/sup 2/-sec or approximately 1.0 mrem/hr. The thermocouple conduit containing the two thermocouples and spiraling 180 deg through the top shield presented no radiation problem. The dose rate was about equal to that of the bulk shielding, 0.32 mr/hr. (M.C.G.)
