THE PLUTONIUM RECYCLE TEST REACTOR SHIELDING EVALUATION

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4775007
The x-ray film studies of the top and bottom primary shields displayed definlte gamma radiation streaming from around the shim control shroud tubes, monitor tubes, and other access holes, but showed effective shielding above and below the process tubes and primary shields. The biological shielding displayed no leaks or weak spots except for areas around all the flux monitor channels and an access hole near the ceiling in -32' C Cell. The bulk of the data indicated a linear increase in dose rate as a function of reactor power level. General gamma dose rates throughout A Cell were 1 to 3 r/hr at 70 Mw, while the general background in B and C Cells varied from 0.7 to 8 mr/ hr. Fast neutron dose rates in A Cell reached 220 mrem/hr at 10 Mw. B and C Cell neutron dose rates with the reactor at 70 Mw were less than 1 mrem/hr. The average ratio of fast neutron dose rate to gamma dose rate through the rotating shields remained constant at 4 : 1 as the fast neutron dose rate increased from background at 1 Mw to 30 mrem/hr at 70 Mw. Tabular and graphic data summarizing the results are presented. Illustrations showing the penetrations in the biological shielding are included. The film holders used during the filming of the top primary shield are illustrated. (auth)
