/cap beta/-$gamma$ CIRCULAR-POLARIZATION MEASUREMENTS OF Sc$sup 46$ AND Fe$sup 59$(thesis)

Using a small long-coil BETA spectrometer and the standard method of forward Compton scattering off a cylinder of magnetized iron, the circular polarization anisotropy A was measured for Co/sup 60/, Na/sup 22/, Sc/sup 46/ and Fe/sup 59/. The calculations for the BETA -spectrometer and a detailed efficiency calculation for the photon polarimeter are given. Various corrections are discussed in detail. The results of A = -0.3144 plus or minus 0.019 for Co/ sup 60/ and A = 0.312 plus or minus 0.026 for Na/sup 22/ are in agreemert with the theoretical value of 1/3 and serve as a check on the efficiency calculations. The result for Sc/sup 46/ is A = +0.079 plus or minus 0.013, in agreement with Bloom, Mann and Miskel, and Daniel and Kuntze. However the disagreement of this value with earlier results can probably be explained by chemical effects, as indicated by results obtained by Boehm after completion of this work. A = -0.066 plus or minus 0.037 was measured for the 462 kev branch in Fe/sup 59/. This value implies that the spin assignment to the 1.1 Mev state in Fe/sup 59/ should probably be changed to 3/2/sup -/. The result for the 271 kev branch is A = - 0.40 plus or minus 0.20. If the proposed spin assignment is valid, then for both branches a considerable violation of the isotopic spin selection rule is indicated. The values for both branches are in disagreement with results by Forster and Sanders. (auth)
