A DIRECT MEASUREMENT OF THE PROTON TOTAL REACTION CROSS SECTION FOR COPPER AT 9.3 Mev

Journal Article · · Proc. Phys. Soc. (London)
A value of 930 plus or minus 70 mb was obtained for the proton total reaction cross section for copper at 9.3 plus or minus 0.3 Mev by a poor- geometry transmission method not involving counter coincidence techniques. This result, which is in good agreement with values obtained by indirect methods, is higher than values predicted by published optical model analyses using a volume absorption term. Differential elastic cross sections are presented for the angular range 30 to 155 deg (center of mass). These were obtained using the same target as in the reaction cross section measurement. Agreement with both the differential cross sections and the reaction cross section can be obtained using an optical model potential with an absorptive term peaked at the nuclear surface. (auth)
