OBSERVATIONS ON THE EFFECT OF PROTECTION OF THE INTESTINE ON THE LETHALITY PRODUCED BY TOTAL BODY $gamma$-IRRADIATION IN RATS. (English Text)

Journal Article · · Med. J. Osaka Univ.

The small intestine and colon were exteriorized from the abdomen of rats by surgical operation, and wholebody gamma irradiation of 1500 r was given with exception of the intestine which was excluded from the gamma flux. The animals of this group survived over 2 months, whereas rats irradiated by whole-body irradiation including the intestine, all died within 7 days of irradiation. When only the exteriorized intestine was exclusively irradiated by 1500 r gamma radiation, the animals showed 100% mortality within 7 days. The small intestine was more sensitive than the colon toward irradiation. (Abstr. Japan Med., 2, No. 1, Jan. 1962)
