Besides a fine structure, the levels of u mesic atoms produce-d on non- zero-spin nuclei also have a hyperfine structure. If the hyperfine splitting of weakly excited levels is large compared to their width, thwis splitting should be important for the magnitude of mu /sup -/ meson depolarization. The magnitude of the effect is estimated for the case when the nuclear spin is 1/2. If the hyperfine splitting of the lower excited levels is large compared to their width, the polarization of a mu meson in the K shell should be approximately 1/3 of that for a nuclear spin of zero. Conversely, if the level width considerably exceeds the hyperfine splitting the hyperfine structure will only be manifest in the K shell and the polarization will decrease to 1/2 that of a zero-spin nucleus.
