The Scientific Research Institute of Nuclear Physics, Moscow State University, confirmed the presence of soft corpuscular radiation at altitudes of ~ 320 km by comparing readings of two radiation-measuring devices on the second Soviet space-ship-satellite. In the equatorial region of the Pacific Ocean, where it was found to be most intensive (5 x 10/sup 6/ particles/cm/sup 2/sec/sup 1/ sterad), this radiation has an energy of the order of 10/sup 4/ ev. The two devices were a photomultiplier and a scintillation counter. The former records x radiation with an efficiency of approximately 100%, protons with an energy > 1 Mev, and electrons with an energy > 30 kev, but is not effective in recording gamma radiation.
