LUMINESCENCE STUDIES OF RARE EARTH COMPLEXES: BENZOYLACETONATE AND DIBENZOYLMETHIDE CHELATES

Journal Article · · J. Mol. Spectroscopy
Systematic studies of the luminescence of the trisbenzoylacetonates and trisdibenzoylmethides of the trivalent rare earth ions (except promethium and cerium) are reported. Molecular fluorescence and phosphorescence spectra of both series of chelates are presented. The chelates were arranged according to total luminescence and phosphorescence yields, and the variations in yields are interpreted in terms of internal radiationless processes. The role of intramolecular energy transfer in these systems as a quenching mechanism is discussed. Photographs of bright line spectra of coordingted Eu/sup 3+/, Tb/sup 3+/, Dy /sup 3+/, and Sm/sup 3+/ are included and the possibility of employing these compounds as optical masers is pointed out.
