THE DECONTAMINATION OF CONDENSATE WASTES CONTAINING AMMONIA

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4797660
Several cation exchange materials were investigated for their ability to remove trace strontium and cesium from dilute ammonium and hydrogen ion solutions. Amberlite IR-120 was found to have the highest uptake of strontium and clinoptilolite the highcst uptake of cesium. Decalso was effective for removing both strontium and cesium from neutral ammonium ion solutions. Acidifying an actual condensate waste containing ammonia increased the uptake of strontium, whereas acidifying a pure ammonia solution decreased the uptake of strontium. A colunm of Amberlite IR-120 removed trace strontium from over 20000 column volumes of the actual condensate at pH 3 without reaching breakthrough. (auth)
