INORGANIC ION EXCHANGE SEPARATION OF CESIUM FROM PUREX-TYPE HIGH-LEVEL RADIOACTIVE WASTES

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4673997
A chemical flowsheet for the separation of cesium from acid Purex formaldehyde-treated waste (FTW) using the mineral clinoptilolite is presented. Breakthrough curves for cesium, sodium, cerium, strontium, ruthenium, and niobium are shown. In loading cesium from FTW on clinoptilolite, cesium ions are concentrated on the exchanger to such an extent that they begin to compete appreciably with each other for sites rather than with sodium and hydrogen only. In elution of cesium from clinoptilolite, the ammonium ion is not so efficient as potassium and rubidium but it is much easier to separate from cesium. (M.C.G.)
