A nuclear fuel element is described that comprises a plane plate having a plurality of perforations. At both faces of this plate, cover sheets are fixed so that the spaces occupied by the perforations form cells in which the fissile material is placed. Preferably the plate has an elongated rectangular shape and the said cells are placed at least at a given distance from the edges. The cover sheets are preferably made from the same material as the plate, and are so fixed onto the plate that each cell forms a gas tight space. The plate and the sheets preferably are made from aluminum, stainiess steel, zirconium, or zirconium alloys. The fuel elements are positioned rn the reactor so that two adjacent elements form a channel between them. (NPO)
