IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO HIGH NEUTRON ABSORBING PLATES, AND NUCLEAR REACTOR CONTROL RODS COMPRISING SUCH PLATES

A highly neutron-absorbing control rod for a nuclear reactor comprises a rectangular plate of metal provided with a plurality of holes extending throughout its length, the holes being filled with the highly neutron-absorbing material. The holes are arranged in a staggered pattern. Each hole is in cross- section a quite elongated ellipse. For making such a plate, a plurality of the holes are drilled through an elongated plate, the major axis of the holes being parallel to the main surfaces of the plate. The holes are then filled with highly neutron-absorbing material and the open ends of the holes are closed with malleable metal plugs. Afterwards the plate is brought to a reduced thickness by roll forming in order to produce a flattening of the round drilled holes to the form of elongated ellipses. (NPO)
