NUCLEAR REACTOR CONTROL ROD AND METHOD OF MAKING SAME
Patent
·
OSTI ID:4129674
In the suggested method of making control rods, high neutron-absorbing material is placed in a plurality of holes drilled parallel to the longitudinal axis in an elongated strip of metal. The metal is then roll formed so as to provide a relatively flat metal strip having severely elongated elliptical holes filled with neutron-absorbing material. The holes are placed in non-touching but overlapping relationship to each other such that large areas are essentially opaque to neutrons. Suitable neutron-absorbing materials include boron, cadmium, hafnium, or their compounds. (A.G.W.)
