Influence in the rat of experimental rickets and the sequelae of rickets on the intestinal absorption of Sr/sup 90/ were studied. In the rachitic rat, intestinal absorption of radiostrontium was reduced by 26%. In animals recovered from severe rickets, the intestinal absorption and skeletal fixation of radiostrontium were the same as in the control animals. In the former, as a result of hypoplasia and hypertrophy of the skeleton, the activity per gram or per cc. of osseous substance appeared clearly increased. Also relating their earlier findings, the authors emphasized the harmful influence of experimental rickets on the consequences of contamination with radiostrontium in the rat. (auth)
