OBSERVATION OF $mu$$sup -$ CAPTURE IN LIQUID HYDROGEN

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. Letters
A 991/2% pure muon beam from the Chicago cyclotron is brought to rest in an 8-liter hydrogen bubble chamber. The incoming particles are identified as muons by their residual range versus curvature in the 20-kilogauss field of the chamber. The reaction mu - + p - n + v is identified by the absence of a decay electron and by the appesrance of a recoil proton created by the neutron. Pion captures and mu captures in elements of Z > l are excluded in identification. Nondecaying meson tracks are not associated with recoil protons due to the general background of lowenergy neutrons near the meson beam. The energy of a neutron emitted froma the end of a meson track must be determined with adequate precision by measuring the range and direction of a recoil proton it is supposed to have caused.
