Strontium-90 and Cesium-137 Absorbed by Rice Plants in Japan, 1960

Journal Article · · Science

The mechanisnm of radioactive cesium and strontium contamination of rice was investigated. About 60% of Sr/sup 90/ contained in polished rice in 1960 is due to root absorption from soil. The amount of Cs/sup 137/ absorbed by rice plants directly from fall-out during the period between ear-shooting and harvest is assumed to be about 20% of total Cs/sup 137/ in the plant.
