IMPROVEMENTS IN ZIRCONIUM ALLOYS

A Zr alloy is described which has increased corrosion resistance to steam or pressurized water at high temperatures. The alloy comprises 0.15 to 5 wt% Cu, less than 0.05 to 0.1 wt% Fe, and balance Zr. The low Fe content may be obtained by careful selection of the Zr sponge deposited in the retort by the Kroll extraction process. Data are given on the effects of varying Fe content (300 to 1500 ppm) on the oxidation of Zr-0.5% Cu alloy at 700 deg C. (D.L.C.)
