IONIC EQUILIBRIA AND ANION EXCHANGE OF URANYL SULFATE SOLUTIONS

A theoretical investigation was performed on the nature of ion exchange of acidified uranyl sulfate solutions with Dowex 21K, a strong base ion exchange resin. It was found that the manner of variation of individual uranium specie concentrations with total sulfate concentration is not significantly affected by total uranium concentration in the range 0.0005 to 0.005 molar. Recent experimental ion exchange data were correlated with theoretical solution ionic concentrations for several assumed reaction mechanisms. The similarity of the results obtained suggests that the method of correlation is not sufficiently sensitive to the different mechanisms to distinguish between them, and/or resin loading is not influenced by the relative concentrations of the different uranium species in solution.
