THE EFFECT OF THERAPY ON CELLS IN THE BLOOD OF LEUKEMIC PATIENTS CAPABLE OF INCORPORATING H$sup 3$ THYMIDINE

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4796205

The ability of circulating leukocytes to synthesize DNA was followed serially after therapy in patients with blood dyscrasias, using tritiated thymidine and autoradiography. Following Myleran therapy in myelocyte leukemia, the fall in labeled cells paralleled that of the total leukocyte count. In chronic lymphocytic leukemia, x-ray therapy to the spleen resulted in a marked drop in the total leukocyte court and a relative increase in the number of labeled cells. Steorid therapy did not decrease the leukocyte count or the number of labeled cells. The results indicate that these agents do not have a selective effect on circulating cells capable of DNA synthesis. The serial labeling indexes appear to be of little additional value for prognosis.
