IONIZATION IN AN ELECTRODELESS DISCHARGE. PART II

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4796093
A discharge is produced in a long cylindrical column by a fast-rising, strong, axial magnetic field. The gas begins to ionlze near zero magnetic field, and continues until the field becomes large enough to quench the ionlzation. The theoretical voltage needed to increase the ionization fraction by a given amount is conmpared with experimental breakdown voltages. The behavior of the electric field during ionization is such tidat breakdown can occur only in the outer layers of the gas; thus breaxdown causes the formation of a lunminous sheath in these layers. The properties of this sheath are studied. (T.F.H.)
