MODERATOR CORE STRUCTURES FOR NUCLEAR REACTORS

A nuclear reactor is designed having a moderator structure comprising a substantially cylindrical core with a vertical axis and a bracing structure encircling the core and adapted to resist distortion thereof. Connecting means are provided for connecting the bracing structure to the core while permitting relative vertical movement between the bracing structure and the core. The said bracing structure is temperature-compensated so that its horizontal components of thermal expansion are substantially the same as those of the core. Preferably, the bracing structure is prestressed by radial screws included by said connecting means and applying radial pressure between the bracing structure and the core. The bracing structure may comprise garters each encircling a layer of graphite bricks of the reactor structure, so that each layer and its associated garter can therefore be considered as a rigid disc. Suitably, the said connecting means include free running rollers engaging between opposing surfaces provided by the core and the bracing structure. Preferably, the bracing structure is supported by a supporting grillage, provision being made for allowing radial expansion or contraction of the structure relative to the grillage. (NPO)
