MEASUREMENT OF THE CIRCULAR POLARIZATION OF HIGH-ENERGY COLLIMATED $gamma$- RAY BEAMS
The measurement of circular polarization at energies higher than 5 Mev using the forward Compton scattering of gamma rays is discussed. Attempts were made to measure the circular polarization of bremsstrahlung radiation produced by electrons accelerated in a Betatron to an energy of 22 Mev. The x rays were collimated to a 1/4 in. beam and then traversed a 1/4 in. plate of a permanent Alnico. The Compton scattered fraction of the beam was allowed to hit a 2 in. internal diameter eopper cylinder centered with respect to the incident beam. The experimental value obtained was delta (experimental) = 0.014 + 0.024. No circular polarization of the bremsstrahlung beam was detected. Therefore, it was concluded that the degree of circular polarization of the beam P < 30%. (P.C.H.)
