The reactor comprises a pressure vessel enclosing a suspension of clad fuel pellets in a liquid moderator, preferably water. The proportion of the fuel to the moderator quantity inside the reactor core may be regulated by the control of the moderator flow through the reactor core. This flow preferably takes place from the bottom to the top of the reactor vessel, while any escape of the fuel pellets from the reactor core is avoided by the arrangement of wire nettings near the top and the bottom of the vessel. According to other embodiments, the said regulation may be effectuated by a mechanical stirrer or by insertion of a bar of solid moderator or of a closed wire netting basket into the core of the reactor. In the latter case, the fuel pellets do not enter into the basket, so it has the effect of a bar made from moderating material. Suitably the reactor inside the vessel is provided with an annular fuel-free reflector space, the level of the rcflector liquid therein being controlled. (NPO)
