A novel plasma containment device is designed in which a plasma jet is injected into a magnetic field at a very high energy and trapped therein. The device comprises means for accelerating a deuterium plasma to a velocity of ~10/ sup 7/ cm/sec and coil means for producing a modified picket-fence magnetic field having two point cusps and one ring cusp.
