The following aspects of the philosophy and the implications of the design are discussed: the safety factors in the engineering design with respect to the strength of steel and Zircaloy; the condensation of steam in the reactor vault in the event of the worst credible accident; the recovery of the heavy water condensed from the steam; the feasibility of using natural uranium as reactor fuel; the versatility of the fuel handling system; and the potentials of the plant design for future developments.
