EFFECT OF IRRADIATION WITH X-RAYS ON THE UPTAKE OF S$sup 35$ SULFATE BY THE EPIPHYSEAL CARTILAGE OF MICE

Journal Article · · Laboratory Investigation (U.S.)
OSTI ID:4795320

After a localized dose of 900 or 2000 r of x rays to the knee joints of 6-week-old mice the cartilage of the epiphyseal plates of the tibias shows on histologic examination a progression of degenerative changes. These are more marked after 2000 r than after 900 r. Roughly in parallel with the histologic changes there is a decreased capability of the cartilage of the epiphyseal plate to fix suifate. More particularly, abnormal chondrocyte s, which on the basis of microscopic examination could be regarded as nonviable, are still able to fix sulfate. In such cells this inherent capability is in evidence at the periphery of the cell, in contrast to the impression that normally this occurs throughout nearly the whole of the cell. (auth)
