Experiments with oats and peas were conducted to ascertain the effect of organic matter on plant uptake of radioactive isotopes (Sr/sup 90/ , Ce/sup 144/ , Cs/sup 137/) from sandy loam and loamy soils of varying mechanical composition. The radioisotopes had no noticeable effect on the growth of the oats or the peas. The outward appearance of the plants growing in sandy loam soils differed little from that of the plants growing in loamy soils. The addition of humus to either soil had a favorable effect on the growth of the oats and peas alike and caused a significant reduction in the uptake of radioactive isotopes. The accumulation of Sr/sup 90/ in pea plants harvested in the tillering stage decreased by a factor of approximately three in loamy soil and more than eleven in sandy loam soil, when humus was added. The Sr uptake by oats in the shooting stage was almost four times greater in sandy loam soil than in loamy soil, but after the addition of humus the rate of absorption from both soils was practically identical. It was concluded that the decrease in plant uptake of radioisotopes under the influence of organic matter was greater in sandy loam soil than in loamy soil. (P.C.H.)
