EFFECT OF ORGANIC MATTER ON THE ACCUMULATION OF FISSION PRODUCTS IN CROPS

An investigation was made of the effect of lime and organic matter, as factors producing variations in the sorptive properties of soil, on the uptake of fission products by agricuItural plants and their accumulation in the crop. Results show that the uptake of radioactive isotopes (Sr/sup 89/ Ce/sup 144/, and Ru/sup 106/) by wheat and pea plants fell sharply both in the reproductive and vegetative organs when lime or organic matter were introduced into the soil, and panticularly when both were introduced. Further experiments on oat, vetch, and maize showed similar results. Peas and vetch were found to absorb radioisotopes more readily than wheat and oats. This is explained by the fact that leguntinous plants consume more calcium than do cereals. In all the experiments, the doses of radioisotopes used had no marked influence on the growth and yield of maize. (P.C.H.)
