RADIATION-INDUCED GELATION IN LIQUID SYSTEMS (thesis)
various monomers and one monomer--polymer system to radioinduced gelation and the effects of inhibitors, mixtures, chain length, and heating. Of the inhibitors tested, diphenylpicryl hydrazyl was the most effective. The effect of heating period on the gelation dose was found to be linear for polyester resin, but only a small effect was observed for ethylene glycol dimethacrylate and triethylene glycol dimethacrylate until thermal-induced gelation occurred suddenly. A comparison of sensitivities of thermal- and radio- induced gelation of various monomers inaicate there is no correlation between the two types of sensitivity except for similar compounds differing only in the number of ethylene groups. The effect of chain length on gelation dose, inhibitor action, and thermal sensitivity was studied on dimethacrylate esters of ethylene, diethylene, triethylene, tetraethylene, and polyethylene glycols.
