THE DUOPLASMATRON AS ION OR ELECTRON INJECTOR OF EXTREMELY HIGH OUTPUT CURRENT DENSITY (in German)

>After a brief review of the discharge mechanism of the duoplasmatron charge carrier source, its characteristlc parameters for operation as ion or electron injector are reported. By variation of the system geometry, the output energy both for ions and for electrons could be increased to more than 100 ev. Since the beam currents are limited by the space charge force in the positive range, this artificial amplification of the output energy means an increase of the beam current attainable. By supply of the discharge with a gas (rare gas), which forms negative ions, the gas consumption of the duoplasmatron used as an electron source (in continuous operation) can be kept very low. A duoplasmatron variant with slit aperture is described for the production of band and dispersed beams in which with H/sub 2/ gas feed the emission of a 20-amp ion current or with rare gas feed a 150-amp electron current can be attained. Several special applications of the duoplasmatron are described in conclusion. (tr-auth)
