DEPENDENCE OF THE DEGREE OF AMPLIFICATION ON THE MEAN OUTPUT CURRENT IN PHOTO-MULTIPLIERS (in German)

Investigations on the dependence of the degree of amplification on the mean output current were carried out on photomultipliers. The change in the degree of amplification was determined from the displacement of the photopeak of the 1.33-Mev line or a Co/sup 60/ test compound in increase of the integral counting rate by introduction of a Cs/sup 137/ supplementary preparation. The results showed that even at mean multiplier output currents of approximately 10/ sup -7/ amp a deviation of the degree of amplification with respect to the unloaded'' state of approximately 1% could occur. The equilibrium process between two steady values of the amplification degree is completed after about 2 hours. Application of this multiplier type to nuclear spectroscopic work would necessitate a stabilization of the complete spectrometer set-up. (J.S.R.)
