GAMMA RAY INDUCED DECOMPOSITION OF ORAGNE IV IN AQUEOUS AND ALCOHOLIC SOLUTIONS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4793492
The effect of Co/sup 60/ gamma radiation upon aqueous and alcoholic solutions of the monoazo dye Orange IV was studied. in methanol, the free radicals formed in the radiolysis reduce the azo linkage of the dye. The initial yield for the decolorization was determined: G(-- Dye) = 2.7. The products of the azo reduction, as identified by their ultraviolet absorption spectra, are the sodium salt of sulfanilic acid and p-aminodiphenylamine and their derivatives. In aqueous solutions, there was no evidence of the products in the absorption spectrum of the decolorized solutions. Mechanisms for the reactions are proposed. (auth)
