>A process is given for fabricating graphitic bodies with enhanced resistance to oxidation, erosion, and thermal shock at high temperatures and enhanced strength characteristics. The process comprises shaping the graphite material with a carbonizable adjuvent and firing the shaped body in an environment supplying a carbide-former which will form a carbide-bonded body in which discrete graphite masses are embedded in a continuous carbide matrix. The carbide-former may be a refractory hard metal, B, or Si, although Si is preferred. (D.L.C.)
