AN INVESTIGATION OF THE SILICON SURFACE-BARRIER FAST NEUTRON SPECTROMETER (thesis)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4792868
The use of surface-barrier solid state detectors for charged particle and neutron spectrometers was investigated. Manufacturing methods for charged particle detectors using 400--500 ohm cm n-type silicon were tested to obtain the best combination of procedures that would yield consistently good detectors. These methods were used to make detectors from 1200--1300 ohm cm silicon for a fast neutron spectrometer. The results of the investigation demonstrated that neutron spectrometers using surfacebarrier detectors could be made if special attention was paid to the detail of their manufacture. The spectrometer's efficiency and reaction cross-section for different energy neutrons will have to be investigated more thoroughly before very useful data can be obtained from the reactor measurements.
