AN INVESTIGATION OF A HELIUM-3 SOLID-STATE FAST NEUTRON SPECTROMETER (thesis)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4053229
A fast neutron spectrometer using the He/sup 3/(n,p) reaction was developed. Silicon surface-barrier charged-particle detectors are used with He/ sup 3/ in a sandwich arrangement. Sum-coincidence circuitry is used, together with a multichannel analyzer to obtain neutron spectra. The theoretical bases of the spectrometer are summarized, and the manufacture and performance of the Si detectors are discussed. The efflciency of the spectrometer was determined to be 3.6 x 10/sup -6/ at 2.5 Mev using coincidence. The estimated efficiency is 5 x 10/sup -5/, indicating that not all the reaction products are detected. The spectrometer appears to be useful for measurements in fast fluxes above 10/sup 5/ nv.
