A method is given for manufacturing finned canning for fuel elements. The method consists in forming a thick hollow cylinder of suitable canning metal (Mg, Al) and pressure-molding said metal by a plurality of part-annular dies distributed around said cylinder, which dies are shaped to form fins in the externaI surface of the canning. Either the dies are driven radially inwards or a tapered mandrel is forced axially through the cylinder. (NPO)
