PHASE RELATIONSHIPS IN THE NICKEL-ZIRCONIUM AND THE NICKEL-HAFNIUM ALLOY SYSTEMS

Journal Article · · Trans. Am. Soc. Metals
OSTI ID:4792606
The phase diagram for the nickel- zirconium alloy system was established through solidus and liquidus temperature determinations, temperature vs resistance measurements, metallographic examinations, and x-ray diffraction investigations. The intermediate phases Ni/sub 11/Zr/sub 9/, Ni/sub 10/ Zr/sub 7/ , Ni/sub 5/ Zr/sub 2/. and Ni/sub 5/Zr are formed peritectically at 1170 deg C (2138 deg F), 1160 deg C (2120 deg F), ll80 deg C (2156 deg F), and 1300 deg C (2372 deg F), respectively. The phases NiZr/sub 2/, NiZr, and Ni/sub 7/Zr/sub 2/ melt congruently at 1110 deg C (2030 deg F), 1240 deg C (2264 deg F), and 1410 deg C (2570 deg F), respectively. Crystallographic data for several of these intermediate phases are also presented. The intermediate phases which form in the nickel-hafnium system are equivalent to the corresponding nickel zirconium phases in that their compositions, modes of formation and crystal structures are analogous.
