A SURVEY OF THE URANIUM-NICKEL SYSTEM. Report No. 67

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4327228
The liquidus of the urarium-nickel system takes the form of two eutectic troughs, the one between U/sub 6/Ni and a compound approximately U/sub 7/Ni/sub 9/ melting at 740 deg C and containing about 10.5 wt.% (33 atomic wt.%) nickel, the other between UNi/sub 5/ and nickel melting at 1110 deg C and containing about 71 wt.% (91 at. wt.%) nickel, separated by a peak which rises to 1305 deg C the melting point of UNi/sub 5/. Compounds are formed by peritectic reactions -- UNi/ sub 2/ at 790 deg C; compounds approximately of compositions U/sub 7/Ni/sub 9/ and U/sub 5/Ni/sub 7/ at 785 and 820 deg C, respectively; UNi/sub 2/ at 785 deg ; and a compound containing 78 to 79 at.% nickel at 1290 deg C. Another compound occurs containing approximately 77 at.% Ni. The exact ranges of composition and formulas of the compounds have not been determlned in this investigation and the formulas suggested are adopted for the sake of convenience. The compounds U/sub 6/Ni, UNi/sub 2/ and UNi/sub 5/ have been established elsewhere by x-ray methods. The solid solubility of nickel in uranium is nearly 0.5 wt.% (2 at.%) at 790 deg C and decreases with the temperature. The solid solubility of uranium in nickel is about 0.75 wt.% (0.18 at.%) at 1000 deg C and decreases with the temperature. (auth)
