SPECIFICATIONS FOR VIBRATIONALLY COMPACTED UO$sub 2$ NESTED TUBULAR FUEL ELEMENT (PRTR MARK II-C)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4792260
A Zircaloy-clad vibrationally compacted uranium dioxide fuel element of nested tubular geometry was designed and fabricated for irradiation testing in the Plutonium Recycle Test Reactor where it is now operating at design power level. This element consists of a central rod, a fuel tube surrounding the central rod, and a large diameter fuel tube surrounding the inner fuel tube. The individual components are separated by coolant channels which are maintained by Zircaloy spacer ribs attached to the cladding. During the design of this nested tubular fuel element, new fabrication techniques were developed. These techniques were used during the fuel element fabrication and specifications governing each part of the work were established. (auth)
